FINLANDIA Turku «Garden state»

«Garden State» is a contemporary interpretation of the ideal of the Garden City.
The aim was to create a human scale environment that is urban and rural at the same time: urban in its density and clear spatial hierarchy, rural in its immediate relation to the surrounding nature.
The spatial solution is arranged as a kind of fractal structure, which forms a gradual transition from public to private.
The aims of sustainability are taken into consideration in as many levels of
urban structure as possible:
– The buildings are constructed mainly of wood. They have simple forms in
which the external surface area is minimized.
– The buildings are connected by semi-warm glazed verandas and green rooms, which reduce heat loss.
– Private gardens and allotments enable small scale food production
– Infrastructure is organized in a very economical way, and it relys greatly on surrounding existing roads.
– There are many common use spaces inside the blocks.

The plan includes apartment houses, row houses and semi-detached houses.
The semi-closed urban structure allows the central park between the buildings to be of very public nature. This way, the park  serves not only  the residents of the actual site but the whole surrounding area and its population.

– Total floor area:15.800 mq
