FINLANDIA Porvoo «EMBROIDERY»

The proposal has a strong but simple spatial idea relying on the landscape of the Porvoonjoki river valley. The meandering structure maximises views to the river and creates a series of richly varied riverside park spaces. The single main street is the urban core. It divides the housing into two areas: on the western side of the street are regular and closed «secret garden» blocks, whereas on the other side the blocks open to the river.

The project aims not only to continue the dense human scale and walkable environment of old Porvoo, but also to create a unifying focal point for the new part of the town. This is achieved by using buildings of three to four stories on average and by building a new «hill» of buildings of up to seven stories in the middle of the area. The centre also contains the new railway station.

The riverside park has a multitude of riverside activities. It is supplemented by two perpendicular park axes that link the river valley into the surroundings. Pedestrian and cycle routes are an important factor in the plan. In the southernmost area closest to the old city centre is a hotel area based on the historic railway station. This area offers a natural starting phase for the realisation.
