SVEZIA Simrishamn «WEAR OUT»

The proposal developed is a response to the special characteristics of the plot, adjacent to the sea and crossed by a stream with a serious risk of flooding partly of the year.
The presence of the brook Tommarpsan and its variable character forced the design to focus around the possibility of intermittent flooding in the intervention area. Modifying the original basin, new streams are created determining future constructions eroding them. Wetland areas will appear in the urban development coexisting with wildlife and controlling the risk of overflow.
Water is understood as a generator of public space that slowly disintegrates buildings, producing a more permeable pedestrian flow. The proposal follows the scheme of the traditional home of Simrisham. A typical house in a continuous front facade, with inner courtyards closed to the pedestrian. Taking this scheme as a starting point we propose a more public way of traversing the urban fabric. New ways to coexist with water and different alternatives of inhabiting public space and housing are proposed.
This peculiarity is transferred to typologies, offering a wide range of types varying in size and use. The housing volume is literally resting on the ground through extremities filled with program functions, able to connect the public space while incorporating protected areas outside the home. The use of the outside space is extended, in an area characterized by an extreme climate, with small pavilions directly related to the garden. That creates more vivid interiors and unique appearance at the urban level.
