GERMANIA Wittstock «Bahnrad»

Wittstock, one of the oldest towns of Brandenburg, has an almost completely preserved
medieval centre. Outside of this centre, there is a heterogeneous urban entity with only little
space and no connections. A sharpening of urban spaces is intended. The town structure, which
has been maintained for centuries, is the motive for dealing with processes of growth and
shrinkage within Wittstock.

The buildings of the railway company Deutsche Bahn are currently idle. The aim is the
reactivation of the historic homogenous area while preserving its substance. Hence, the railway
building will be the location for cultural events and arthouse cinema to culturally boost the
Wittstock area supra-regionally. The railroad line RE6 from Berlin to Wittenberge optimizes the
public flow. The KulTourBahnhof becomes a cultural hub, the former railway storehouse a bicycle
and shuttle station. A network of bicycle lanes does not only link the surrounding municipalities,
but also connects the area to national and European bicycle routes and therefore strengthens
the region with regard to Brandenburg’s tourism concepts.

The historic centre with its medieval density is the origin of Wittstock. The core town,
dominating the inner part of the city, creates clear streetwalls, which are also recreated in the
street Werderstrasse by constructing alongside the streets. Consciously inserted interruptions
connect the inner block to the bordering roads, taking the intended compaction as a basis.
Created spaces revive the district and generate additional public benefit. The diverse
construction in the inner area does not only lead to a new quality of utilisation in comparison to
the historic block structure, the identified intra-urban spatial reserves also offer great potential
for enlargement.
